DICHOTOMY

a difference between two completely opposite ideas or things

We all encounter dichotomies every day. It's a part of human experience. To follow your heart or to follow your mind? The Dichotomy between emotions and logic. The mind says one thing, the heart says another-often in complete opposition.

Long back, the day I first had the idea of building a jewellery brand, I got several conflicting thoughts running in my mind. . One side whispered, “You know almost nothing about jewellery—how can you do this?” The other side countered, “Jewellery brings joy, to others and to me. I may have a lot to learn, but I can learn.” Although jewellery doesn't just do that. Both sides had their perfectly reasonable arguments. It will be a much longer article if I go into all the arguments. But I can tell you one thing: I got stuck, not moving in either directions.

Isn't that something we all face at some point in life? We get stuck because we want to make the right decision. But then I had a big revelation. One that changed everything for me.

(I know this might not be the kind of story you'd expect on a jewellery website so if you’ve paused to explore our story, thank you so much for taking the time.

We face different dichotomies through out our lives and we expect ourselves to take the right paths. Somehow we believe if we put in enough efforts, we will be able to gather all the information we need to make the right decision. But in the beginning we have the least amount of information, isn't it? Most decisions that we make for our future is when we have the least amount of information. More information comes when we actually start walking on one path. So if we want to make the right decision, we'll have to go into the future to get the information we need, right? But that's not possible, is it? There is no way to know what we are about to do is the right thing or not, unless we do it and see what happens.

So what's the solution to this fundamental human experience? We take the decision with what we have in the present and do everything we can to make it right.

This is how I started working on Dichotomy.

Most things around us have their utility. All these things make our lives easier. But jewellery is like art. It serves a different purpose. It brings you joy. This was very intriguing to me. So naturally the next step would be to start learning about jewellery. Understanding jewellery was important. It in itself is a life long journey, but for building a jewellery brand, there are a lot more things involved. And still nothing will guarantee any desired outcome. The silver lining is, even if you fail, it'll give you some satisfaction to your heart that you did everything you can. Which is a great thing if you know how an unsatisfied heart feels like. If there is one thing I want you to take out of this, it is this: Facing and living dichotomies is what it means to be a human. We need to be reminded that sometimes. This struggle will always be with us. But we can build something beautiful out of it.

Which, in this case, is actually something that makes you feel more beautiful. That's how the name "Dichotomy" came. It's not just about jewellery, it's about you and me.

A beautiful piece of jewellery can make you feel good. It can make you feel confident. It can also help you express yourself. Sometimes it shows the world where you come from, your culture. And of course, it can be used as a status symbol or an investment for the future. But out of everything jewellery can do for you, there is one thing which, I think, is most incredible: It can capture a piece of your life, your memories. I believe it's the most beautiful way to hold a memory.

The ring that your brother gives you out of his first salary, or a pendant that you wore on the first date with your now partner, or the pair of earrings you choose to start your first day at a job that you struggled to land, or a surprise gift you gave to your teenage daughter when she didn't expect it or a bracelet given to you from someone you love which reminds you of them everyday.
You see what I mean?
A beautiful piece of jewellery would make you feel good on its own, but when it holds a memory, it becomes something more. It becomes a reason to smile, no matter where life takes you. This is coming from a personal experience too.

This is the reason why I started Dichotomy.

Our jewellery is minimal, yet remarkable. They are not heavy on eyes. You are the statement, you will always be. They are not heavy in weight either, so you can wear them for the whole day, everyday. And they are not even heavy on your pocket too, despite their beauty and premium quality.
